I wish someone had told me what to expect. But no-one did. I’m trying to remedy that for you now.

Growing up it was not expressed to me that I needed to prepare for the future. I half believed in myself because some teachers knew I was smart enough to do the work, and more; the other half just let go and played video games. I got in trouble with the law, final year of high school, and then actually applied & enrolled in university out of fear, not knowing what I wanted. As you might guess, I made very good grades, but withdrew midway in the second semester.

Half of my family is on the successful side of things, in general terms. The other half, myself included, we tend to develop illness, mentally.

I think half of my problem is that I don’t believe in things quickly enough when they are the correct things… i think to myself, ‘i’ve got it worse’ or can’t work for me– self-defeating. I also have a foundational fear that somehow I’ll trip myself. So, I tend to believe that taking a contrarian or cynical attitude can work better.

Your story is remarkable. I can’t think of other work than programming where the emphasis is mainly on the code, and much less on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and putting your best self forward.

How do you get better at feeling/listening to your own body?

Would you get yourself in a meditative state and then ask yourself questions and listen to what your body tells you emotionally?

Which methods work for you?

@Troels: Yes, exactly, that’s how you do it.

It tends to work even better when I’m doing it with someone who’s even more present than I am, either in-person or over the phone.

I just finished watching your screencast on productivity at peepcode and decided to check your site out. Great stuff! I’ll definitely be checking out more of these videos. I think about these kinds of things myself, and lots of what you’ve said I’ve also found on my own.

Thanks!
